Preparing for 2nd Thanksgiving Away From Home

November 25th, 2008

Thanksgiving time is different when you don’t live near your family. Either you prepare for the trip home, or you prepare for the week without family. In my family’s case, we are now preparing for the second year away from home.

Just to give you a feeling of the distance we live away from the fam:

I’m sure that there are several ways of dealing with the distance between the family. Last year’s method proved extremely satisfying, so we’ll be going for take 2. That method, of course, consisting of cooking like mad people and stuffing of faces. The center of this madness is, of course, the Turkey. Utilizing the Warden family method of determining the required size of a Thanksgiving turkey, we figure that a 13 pound turkey is big enough for the wife and I. That figure comes from the generally accepted turkey size for 2 people who eat a lot and want leftovers… plus ten pounds. Pictures of this handsome beast will be taken, I assure you.

There will be lots more food. Mac and cheese, grandma style with extra velveeta covered with extra colby baked for added love, green bean casserole, mashed taters with cheese goodness, and probably a pumpkin pie. The more food the better, since this is not just an exercise in eating, but also an exercise in cooking the day away, in the hope that the memory of your family fades into the turkey-drug induced afternoon sleep.

Yes, we’ll be missing our families this, now our second Thanksgiving away from home, but that won’t stop us from celebrating the holiday. Plus we will make good use of the brilliant webcam.
