Socialism in America? Well… Not Exactly.

April 5th, 2009

America is waking up to the shocking reality, a sober discovery, that we finally managed to put someone in charge who is willing and able to become America’s first fascist leader. I may be one of the few people willing to say it in real words. I’m not one to play politically correct and sensitive. Stuart Varney, at the Wall Street Journal more eloquently shares his concerns.

I must be naive. I really thought the administration would welcome the return of bank bailout money. Some $340 million in TARP cash flowed back this week from four small banks in Louisiana, New York, Indiana and California. This isn’t much when we routinely talk in trillions, but clearly that money has not been wasted or otherwise sunk down Wall Street’s black hole. So why no cheering as the cash comes back?

My answer: The government wants to control the banks, just as it now controls GM and Chrysler, and will surely control the health industry in the not-too-distant future. Keeping them TARP-stuffed is the key to control. And for this intensely political president, mere influence is not enough. The White House wants to tell ‘em what to do. Control. Direct. Command.

The fact is, if you offer a private organization a load of no strings attached funding (in some ways like the roll of private venture capitalists), you nod your head and put your hand out. Then, when laws are passed to control you on the basis that you are now a “public sector organization” since you’ve taken public funding, you are kinda screwed. You’ve already budgeted with the money, organized based on your funding. Re-organization costs a lot of money in these large companies. This is why the free market works. Smaller more nimble companies are supposed to be able to come in and operate cheaper and more efficiently, offering competition. When the government props up the big guy, people start talking about Socialism, and unfairness in the marketplace. When the government fires the CEO and says they plan to control the pay of all employees in the company, is it time to start talking about fascism?

I think so. I think we are now a fascist government, much in the same way that people now describe China as a free market capitalism. They aren’t a free market capitalist country, just like us. Small sectors are free market, but the largest, biggest, strongest, and most profitable sectors are NOT free markets in this country. We’ve been this all along. We just haven’t needed to use the powers that exist. This is why people get so worked up when laws offering even the smallest seemingly insignificant powers to executive or legislative branches of government are passed. Because many small powers can be used and interpreted to build a case for the ability of our president to fire your company’s CEO. Let’s also not forget that the CEO in question here was working for the salary of $1 per year. ONE DOLLAR! It was his sacrifice, in order to try and restore GM to greatness.

You can make fun of Glenn Beck all you want, but his tears represent the feelings millions of Americans now have towards their once-beloved country.
